Quilted Love

My mom has become quite the quilter...and we have become the beneficiaries much to our delight. She made a quilt for our bed a while back and one for Maria at birth. Now she has made another for Maria, the one with the dolls. It even has doll clothes to dress the dolls on the quilt. The green/pink flowered quilt is Anna's birth quilt, which hangs in her room as decoration.

Pigtail envy

My friend Lee had posted some pictures of her little girl in pigtails. I was jealous, the last time I had tried Maria's in pigtails she had too many loose hairs to make it work...so I thought, let's try again...and sure enough it was long enough...so we are over our pigtail envy and have a new way to do Maria's hair.
We have plenty to praise God for; pigtails...it sure is the little things in life that make me happy!

Anna Elizabeth

7lb 8oz 20 inches
9:14 am
She has a little bit of dark hair and blue eyes.
She is named after her grandmother's. Ann is Grandma Unger's middle name and Elizabeth is Grandma Saunder's middle name.
I was having some stronger contractions last night and thought we might be heading to the hospital sometime during the night. I went to bed and was up and down several times, but until about 4 in the morning I was able to sleep. I got up and was dealing with contractions and talked to the doctor, who told me to head to the hospital if they were 5 minutes apart or meet at the office at 8:20 for him to check me. I originally had a 9:10 appointment anyway, which ironically was the case with Maria too. I had her on a Friday morning and had an appt. scheduled that day too. So, anyway, I decided that at about 6:15 I better call my mom and have her start to head this way. We ended up leaving for the hospital at about 8, after dropping Maria off at the neighbor's to stay until mom could come get her. On the way to the hospital I had to remind Larry that he could go a tad faster, since I was in labor! When we got to the hospital I told Larry that he had better get a wheelchair since I didn't think I could walk the whole way to OB. Then they made up go through registration, much to our frustration as we were supposed to be preregistered. Someone from OB came to get me and when we got back and I was checked I was already at about 9 1/2...so they called my doctor and he started to make his way over. We were in the labor room settled at about 8:20 and by 9:14 I was looking at my beautiful new daughter. It's a good thing this hospital was closer than where I delivered Maria, because if I had been trying to break my labor record I did it!
She seems to be a healthy little girl, hungry and tired too. Dad is holding her now as he calls to share the good news. I think I am ready for a little nap!
We have plenty to praise God for; a second beautiful daughter!

A day with mom

Maria isn't too sure about this picture thing...she's giving the eye.

Checking out the sleeping white tiger.

Our play group planned to go to the Potawatomie Zoo in South Bend today.  We were finally lucky enough to have excellent weather on a Wednesday.  I think there were 8 moms and kids that were able to go including myself from our normal play group, and a few other friends of friends who tagged along.  We had a wonderful time checking out the animals and enjoyed a picnic lunch at the playground by the zoo, which was super busy with all the end of year school groups visiting!  Maria has been to just one other zoo, but I think she enjoyed this time much more, as she is a bit more aware of the animals now.  She was great ALL day, missed her nap, went on two errands afterward with me, got an ice cream treat, which she ate pretty neatly by herself on the way home, and is lying on the sofa now with Blankie watching a little PBS.

We have plenty to praise God for; a easy-going, content little girl...we LOVE her!

all fenced in!

We have been eagerly anticipating a new fence to contain our "back" yard...and I say "back" because most everyone uses the back door as the main entrance since it is closest to the church entrance, and we have streets on 3 out of the 4 sides of our house.   This entrance unfortunately leads them through the office, usually a messier room just because I do my projects/crafts in there.  Now maybe it will look more like a backyard, not sure that will make people use the front more, but we could hope.  Regardless, we are so happy to have a way to allow Maria more freedom to play in the yard, while we do something in the house, work in the yard, etc. without worrying every 5 seconds that she went out into the road.

We also have planted a garden again this year, our third.  Here is last year (which we never got to fully enjoy, since we moved mid July). We have a smaller plot than before, but just enough to handle with a newborn and a two year old around.  We spent about 4 hours weeding out the grass yesterday. Since it is a newly tilled plot, grass is going to be an issue for a while.  Most other weeds were taken care of by the Preen we applied early on.  Most of the seeds we planted have come up, with the exception of the onions, leek and spinach.  We replanted the spinach and got some onion sets to replace the seeds.  We have a nice amount of beets, carrots, peas, lettuce, kohlrabi, and sunflowers coming up.  We did starts of broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage that were transplanted a couple weeks ago.  We have starts of cucumber, zucchini, cantaloupe, and summer, butternut and acorn squash that Larry is planting in the picture.  I bought tomato, eggplant, bell peppers and banana peppers from a local nursery.  I also seeded the green beans yesterday.  So if we get some of all that we have planted, we should have a nice mix of fresh produce this summer.
We have plenty to praise God for; a new fence and a promising looking garden!

Maria really likes to sing lately, lots of songs...hopefully you can figure out what she is singing...it is kind of a long video...over 3 minutes just so you know.

yum, yum

Maria wasn't interested in eating her pudding herself, she said it was "sour". So she instead fed it to Larry!

chair for charity

A friend of mine here in Culver asked a while back if I wanted to decorate and donate a chair for their Tri Kappa Chairs for Charity event.  I said sure.  I got a chair from another friend from church, and it sat for quite some time since then!  I thought I had an idea I was going to do, but then changed my mind.  It just hit me when I was looking at the chair and saw the 6 small spindles on the back that I could make them into a rainbow.  I chose a verse from Genesis 9:13 about God's promise to us to never flood the earth again.  I love rainbows and what they mean, so I decided to go for it, and I got it done.  I decoupage the verse on the top of the chair after cutting out the letters from some old magazines.  I then decoupage the colored tissue paper on the spindles.  The hardest part was painting the picture on the seat.  I found this mural online that I used as my guide.  I have never been able to just paint something out of my mind.  So it was helpful to have this as a guide for me to look at.
The Chairs for Charity event will take place in June 28 with an auction.  Check out their link for more information.

Just cute

She saw me with the camera and starting saying "cheese".  I had to take her picture, she was too cute!

academy walk

It was such a nice day on Sunday that we went for a walk at the Academy.  It was nice to have a large open place to let Maria run around and not have to worry about cars.  We have been spoiled here the last few days with amazing warm weather, and sunny, clear skies.  Supposed to be rain the next couple, but we won't complain too much, our garden does need some moisture!

We have plenty to praise God for; sunshiny days!

36 weeks and a soapbox

yep, I finally look pregnant, according to what most people tell me...well, heck I only have a few weeks left, I hope I look pregnant!  That must be one of the most annoying things about being pregnant, random unsolicited comments.  That is why I am so grateful I was pregnant during mostly cold weather.  No one can tell when you have a huge winter coat on that you are pregnant and so you avoid comments from total strangers.  The advice, questions, and just plain annoying comments do get really old after awhile.
Speaking of strangers, does anyone else find it odd when complete strangers start trying to have a conversation with your 2 year old, and expectantly wait for a response.  Considering she is pretty shy even when around people she knows such as our family, I would consider it a great miracle that she would start talking openly with a stranger.  But what I find most disturbing is that I really don't want my 2 year old to feel that she should have to talk to these people.  I usually just smile and not give any information to them.  I figure if I answer for her, she might start thinking she would be okay answering them.  I know they are being harmless and just like I think 2 year olds are cute, they do too...but really people, give me a break and remember that "don't talk to strangers" is a pretty accepted thought for kids.
Okay, sorry for the rant, it just seems that lately everywhere we go, it's pregnancy comments and "oh, she's adorable, what's your name?..."  Okay, done with my soapbox now!
Maria listening to her little sister.
I'm not sure what she thought she heard, but was pretty excited about it.

We have plenty to praise God for; anticipation for new life.

30 days

Yep, the ticker says we are down to 30 days, now whether the little girl growing inside me has the same timeline we will soon find out. The ultrasound we had on Monday turned out great.  The tech said I was measuring about 35 1/2 weeks, and I was right at 35 weeks.  She said the baby looked to be approximately 6 lb 3 oz.  Fluid levels were good, so all is well, and my doctor was just being cautious, which I appreciate.  I will have Larry take another picture of my baby belly when he is back tomorrow.  He went to Indy to run the mini-marathon.  So pray for clear, cool weather.  It was rainy off and on here yesterday and today just a wee bit, and hot weather is never fun to run in, not that I like to run period, just saying!

Maria is really starting to get interested in other babies, at playgroup, and out and about.  We were at the library today and another mom with her newborn was there.  She wanted to go see her and very carefully looked over the edge of the car seat at her.  We think she is going to make a great big sister.  She keeps telling us that she is going to be the "big sister".  When I ask her if she will teach her sister how to talk, crawl, go potty she always smiles and says "yes".

She knows she will go to a friend's house when we go to the hospital to get the baby and now everyday she keeps asking me if she is going to his house...guess I didn't need to tell her so early, as we will now be asked everyday till she goes!

We were working on getting the nursery organized the other day and Maria wanted to get into the crib.  She started turning on the mobile and other musical fish aquarium in there and laid down.  Then she asked "sing me, mommy".  And of course she wanted twinkle, twinkle(which these days refers to anything having to do with a star also!).  So I stared singing and she looked at me and said "I no nap mommy".  She just wanted to make sure I knew that she wasn't really taking a nap, in case I didn't know.  It made me smile.

Some other fun tidbits about Maria lately:
E-I-E-I-O coming from Maria usually refers to anything that has to do with a farm.  Such as her Baby Einstein video called On the Farm, or a farm we might drive by, or her Barney book that plays Old MacDonald, or her block farm set, interesting she can make that connection to so many things.

She is becoming quite the singer...she has a broad repertoire of songs like Frere Jacques(her FAVORITE), Mary Had a Little Lamb, Rain, Rain Go Away, It's Raining, It's Pouring, Jesus Loves Me, Twinkle, Twinkle, ABC's , Baa, Baa Black sheep, Rock A Bye Baby, London Bridge that she knows most or all of the words too.  There are a few Nursery Rhymes that she can also recite...it's fun to listen to her while playing or going to sleep as she will often go through several of her favorites.

Since Maria was sick a few weeks back she got used to taking some medicine.  A bit of Tylenol for a fever, some Vicks for her congestion/cough, and usually nasal spray for her nose.  So she got in the habit of having some and one night told us "I need medicine".  Which we replied "No, you're not sick anymore" and she countered "I sick, followed by a cough, cough(a very fake desperate attempt to convince us!)  How did she get so smart?

Overheard while she was playing the other day:
(Maria on her play phone)
"hello, it me"  pause
"oh, daddy church"  (He was preparing for a funeral)
"I talking phone"
She does like to fake call people...not so into the real phone yet, but every once in a while we can get her to say hello, I love you or  some short responses to family that call.

Oh, Maria is starting to want to go to the bathroom by herself.  She still has trouble getting on the toilet as she isn't quite tall enough yet, even with the stool's help.  So, yesterday she had a almost fall in the toilet scare, but came out of it laughing!  We love that she is now running to the bathroom instead of away when she has to go.  Wednesday while we were out doing some yard work, she had an accident, so the next time I just quickly had her go in the yard, not as easy as with a boy, but we managed.  Anyhow, so just a short time later I look over and she is bent over, pants around her ankles going again...only not pee this time!  I laughed, then scooped her up and took her inside to the bathroom and explained that we need to go poo inside not in the yard, but it was too funny!

Well, okay, hope that updates you on what's happening here!
We have plenty to praise God for; spring is finally here and we love it!
