depressing views

Yes, this is what our house is starting to look like...kind of depressing, but it means progress is being made in the box filling category. The moving company sent their rep. yesterday and it looks like we will move on the 14/15th. He said if we get it all loaded and his guys aren't too beat we could do it all on the 14th instead of an overnight move since it is only an hour from here. So here's to hoping we get it all done quickly. I have sent out postcards to those I have snail mail addresses for and an email for the others, but if you don't get either by next week drop me a line and let me know and I can get you our new contact information. You can use this address to let me know (mom2maria at hotmail dot com) I still have my other address, but I use this one so if I start getting spam I don't have to change that address again.

We have plenty to praise God for; a exciting new future ahead of us.

mission accomplished, Red Bird that is.

We had a wonderful time in Kentucky on our mission trip. We took a group of 15 adults and youth, almost equally divided, from our church to Red Bird Mission in Beverly, Kentucky, which is in the Southeastern corner, very close to Tennessee, actually on our free day we drove from Kentucky to Tennessee to Virginia in 5 minutes...okay, just the tip of each, but that counts right?

This is a picture of the Red Bird Campus

Red Bird Mission is a United Methodist Mission started in 1921 by the Brethren Church and since then has continued to provide support services to the people of the Appalachia. This area of Kentucky, Bell County, has a very high unemployment/poverty rate, the third highest in the country, due to the lose of the coal industry and people use the services of Red Bird to help them meet their daily needs. They have various services, but the main ones include, health clinic, dental clinic, community store, craft store(most items are made by local artisans), work camp(which is what we did).

During our week there are approximately 120 volunteers, mainly from Methodist churches in Ohio, that came to work on community housing through the work camp experience. What we pay to participate goes toward purchasing the materials for the improvements made and of course to feed us. Our group was assigned a mobile that needed various repairs. This family had been moving their trailer to another lot, many people rent their land, when the trailer literally split in half. So they purchased another that was not in very good condition, water damage, and the roof was not in great shape.

We spent four days that week making repairs and improvements. First we cool sealed the roof with some wicked smelling silver sealant. We did the underpinning around the outside of the trailer, it made it look so much nicer. Another group worked on replacing the flooring throughout the trailer with linoleum and then put up trim and thresholds where the seams met. I helped to put in a couple new windows and a door and its handles. I also worked a bit on the deck we put up out front, complete with the stairs that one of the youth boys and I finished. We also had some men from another group some help us move another deck to the back of the trailer, and put up the utility pole so they could get their power turned on. Some of the youth girls spent time digging out a trench to put the sewer pipe in.
The Appalachian Mountains

We spent our free day on Wednesday poking around the local town of Middlesboro and then to Cumberland Gap. It was good to rest for a day, but it made getting back to work feel tough. All in all it was a wonderful experience. Our group got along great and we accomplished so much. It was awesome to see the youth we took step up and work when they needed to without complaint. The family we worked for was so thankful and was there many days as we worked helping alongside us, or letting the youth play with their adorable puppies in the down time. The wife made us some scrumptious peanut butter pies as a thank you. We would go back in heartbeat if the opportunity presented itself. If you are interested check it out, any size group can head down to help out. Don't worry if you don't feel skilled enough, most of us weren't skilled either, but you quickly learn what you have to. We even had a lady with us who worked helping sort clothing and other donations in the community store because she was not physically able to work on the site with us.

By the way Maria got along wonderfully without us, although we am sure she was neglected by her grandmas and great grandma who watched her ;)
Sorry for the lack of personal pictures...I decided just to forgo the camera on the trip, one less thing to worry about.

We have plenty to praise God for; a blessing of a trip.

on the road again...

So, I guess I won't be making any dresses for Maria for a while anyway! We are moving. Larry received a call a week ago to call the Warsaw District Superintendent. So he did and we were told that he was being appointed to Wesley UMC in Culver. Wow, we were not expecting this, since it is after annual conference which is when most appointments have already been made. Saturday we met with the Pastor/Parish Committee of this church and then everything became official, once Maria won them over with her charming looks! Our church was told this morning, and though many were sad, they know that God leads us where we are supposed to go. So, after our week-long mission trip to Red Bird Mission in Kentucky, which we leave for today, every free moment will be spent filling boxes. We could use your prayers for this hectic time. Pray for our mission trip, safety, and for the work to be meaningful to the receiving party. Also pray for my mom and grandma and Larry's mom as they watch Maria while we are away...hopefully she will be on her best behavior, and them too. :) Pray as we get ready to leave, and as we adjust to the newness there. It has been a great three years in DeMotte, and we are thankful for the love and support of the church family here. What better family could we have asked to bring Maria into.

Meeting Charlotte Amelie

A week ago we were able to visit our friends Rachel and Daniel in Chicago and meet their newest family member Charlotte Amelie. She is adorable and such a blessing to their family. We are so happy for them. Here are some pictures...I stole them from Rachel's blog...I didn't have my camera.

Happy Father's Day

What a great Dada Maria has.

We love you!

p.s. made this kerchief for Maria from scraps that my mom had from making this dress for her.

So, I had been wanting to make a dress for Maria for a while, and I finally had the time, thanks to some prep help from my mom, and got it done this weekend. So what do you think for a first time pattern follower, I have done other sewing, but never from a pattern. I only had a few screw-ups; like cutting out two identical back pieces when it was supposed to be two mirror images, and I sewed a seam the wrong measurement. When you follow the pattern it really isn't too hard...but there were a few head-scratching moments! We'll see what else I can whip up this summer! It's a good thing I have so many friends with little ones...future recipients.
Isn't she a cute model?

We have plenty to praise God; smart people who know how to make SIMPLE patterns!

Happy Birthday Trey...baptism too

My nephew had his golden birthday this weekend, in case you have never heard of that, it is when you turn the age of your birthday date. So in his case he was turning 7 on the 7th so it was his golden birthday.

Maria helping Trey with presents.
Trey reading his cards, he is getting to be such a good reader.

He wanted a hunting cake...so there was a hunter, trees and some deer on it.

We were also able to be a part of the celebration of his baptism. Larry was the dunker in the tank with him. It was a hot weekend and we were tired from vacation, but it was good to be a part of his special weekend.

more time at the beach

Maria loves to play in the sand.

Cape May Lighthouse
At the top...199 steps up!
Look at the birds mom!
I'm not quite sure about the waves, they are kind of loud.
See the waves are okay.
Ah, I love the beach.

Maria playing in the sand...(sorry for the loud wind sound)

the beach

We took a drive down to North Wildwood to the beach, it was getting windy and a bit chilly so we just took a walk and headed back home. Maria liked watching the birds and water.

Cape May Zoo

Brown Bear

Bison
Giraffe

Camel

Flamingos

We spent our first day in New Jersey poking around the Cape May Zoo here in Cape May Court House. Some of the animals were really active. We even saw a bison chasing an elk around their habitat. Although Maria seemed more interested in the other kids than the animals...we had fun.
We have plenty to praise God for; beautiful animals.

caged animal

Maria is having a great time on vacation...here is her favorite place to play! Buffy's cage. We are staying with friend's of Larry's from when he attended seminary in New Jersey and had his student appointment.

We have plenty to praise God for; great friends willing to open their house for us to have a wonderful, relaxing vacation.
